You can use the reset safari option to delete the favicons,and then go to the websites one by one to get the favicons back.

I still use the free version of Carbon Copy Cloner. It will do full and incremental back-up, and also will let you backup specific folders, like iTunes.

Reboot the computer and press and hold down the option key immediately after the startup chime. If you do it properly, the computer will boot to a simple GUI that lists all bootable volumes and allow you to select the volume to boot to. If nothing shows up, your harddrive may be screwed up.
