    Leopard Public Folder

The public folder doesn't get it's network name by renaming that folder, it gets it from the account name... Want a different public folder name on the network, change the account information (or create a new account). But as Satcomer pointed out, don't go around renaming folders that were...

need help upgradeing from 10.2 plz

Your iMac G4 uses two different types of memory... one, which is under the bottom plate, is designed to be accessed by most users and takes a PC2100 SO-DIMM and can handle up to 1 GB modules. The second require special tools to access (and it helps to have the service manual when doing it) is a...

Leopard and all regular SW compatible with G5 iMac?

Right now most current software titles are Universal (designed to run equally well on PowerPC and Intel based Macs). Most older software is PowerPC-only but will run on Intel-based Macs (with a slight performance hit). Some developers are starting to release (or have said they will in the...

    Good uses for old Macs

I'll have to go back through my old software, but the three software titles released for free by Strata include the following... Strata Vision 3D 4.0 (basically a free version of Strata Studio Pro 1.5... I actually created my original models using it) Strata VideoShop 3.0 Strata MediaPaint...

Your startup disk is almost full...

Back in the NeXT days we had an app called DarkForest for dealing with this type of stuff... today there are two apps that provide similar functionality, OmniDiskSweeper and WhatSize. Sadly WhatSize is no longer a free application.

Quadra 840 unable to load OA 8.0

Just FYI... Neither 7.1 nor 7.6 are needed before installing Mac OS 8.0/8.1 on a Quadra. Further, there is no update path from 7.1.x to 7.6.x. Apple sold 7.0.x, 7.1.x, 7.5.x and 7.6.x as separate operating systems. Apple provides the complete install for 7.5.3 (here) and the update to...

Quadra 840 unable to load OA 8.0

Is this the generic Mac OS 8.0 installation disk or one that was bundled with another system? The generic (retail) versions of 8.0 and 8.1 should have no problem being installed on a Quadra, but the bundled versions were only shipped with PowerPC based systems (and most likely don't include the...

    Good uses for old Macs

I don't do music, but I capture video using an 8600/300 (with a G3/450 upgrade) that has both a VCR and DVD Player connected to it (it also serves as my TV). Add to that some of the other stuff that I still do on my PowerBook 3400c/200 (like 3D modeling) and I get a lot of use out of my older...

    Where to get Rhapsody

First, Blue Box doesn't work with Mac OS 9 at all... Mac OS 8 was design for Blue Box, Mac OS 9 was designed for Classic. And I'm not saying this in a general sort of way, I mean the actual foundations of each were actually geared towards these tasks while in development. So if you are using...

    Where to get Rhapsody

I'm planning on putting together a contact page and the like on my site, but I've gotten a little behind on it lately. As for what I've been up to lately... beyond work, mostly Star Trek type of stuff (like here, here and here). I posted this else where in the last couple days, so I may as...

The Mac is doooomed (tell me I'm crazy)

Some of us wouldn't spend $1000 on a Mac even being life long Mac users. My fastest system is a Sawtooth G4 with a G4 running at 1.2 GHz (256k of L2, 2 MB of L3), nVidia GeForce2 MX video card (32 MB of VRAM), 640 MB of memory (should be up to 1 GB in a few weeks), with 60 GB and 30 GB drives...

The Mac is doooomed (tell me I'm crazy)

And Apple could fold the iTunes Music store and start installing Zune's software on all new iPods. But not in Jobs' life time. Actually, Apple would not only lose the advantages their hardware currently has by dropping Mac OS X... they would lose the profit margins as well...

The Mac is doooomed (tell me I'm crazy)

Corporations, like most people, are pretty much all about self-interest. If you wouldn't do something that would hurt your income, why would you think Apple would? Lets run the numbers here guys... which we will keep pretty simple for the sake of argument. Lets set some easy boundaries...

How Can I configure OS 10.2 so that I can use a cable modem and Road Runner?

Then you are the only person in the world to have a version of Mac OS X (including all versions of 10.x) that doesn't have DHCP. My screen shot on the networking panel is from this very system I'm posting from (running 10.2.8). I've been using Road Runner for years and still have two systems on...

    QuarkXPress or InDesign?

For the stuff that I do, I use Stone Design's Create. It effectively replaced both QuarkXPress (and PageMaker) and Illustrator on many of my systems. Another reason I use it a lot is the fact that I have versions for OPENSTEP, Rhapsody and Mac OS X.

    Justify the name "Cocoa"

At the time the name was picked (around 1999) Apple was doing a big push to integrate Java into Yellow Box... including making many of the bundled apps in Java rather than Objective C (for example, TextEdit was done in Java in Yellow Box... though most Rhapsody users have all switch to an...

    MacOS 8.6 on G4?

The only 8.6 that is going to run on that system is the 8.6 that it shipped with. The generic 8.6 wasn't designed for that hardware. If you don't have the original software installer, then you have to bump up to the next generic release... 9.0. Apple doesn't provide support on generic OS...

How Can I configure OS 10.2 so that I can use a cable modem and Road Runner?

All versions of Mac OS X have DHCP support... and 10.2's version isn't that complicated.

    Post your desktop!

Yeah. I hadn't finished configuring it at that point, but it is one of the only ways to have a desktop image in NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP (the other way I know of is by using ToyViewer). I have a ton of apps and the standard NeXT dock is pretty limited in space, so Fiend is a great help for keeping...

Intersting Article Re: Viruses, iPods, Apple Computers, Etc.

What is actually very odd about Mac "security" coverage is the fact that there are thousands and thousands of articles written about this subject, and yet the total number of Mac OS X systems exploited (ever) can be counted on one hand of an absent minded carpenter. While the ratio of...
