    Rant: Quit yer whinin' (QE)

There must be something wrong with your machine. I have never experienced this with mine, even in VPC. 2-3 seconds is a very, very long time for a lag. You say that you can do these tasks on Windows with only 64MB RAM - I really would not recommend using win2k or XP with 64MB RAM - very...

    Rant: Quit yer whinin' (QE)

I have a clamshell iBook which runs OSX fine. I do not perceive upgrading for several years. I have owned the computer for several years. That means that I will get at least 5 years use out of it as my primary workstation. It will then be put to good use a server of some sort. Why will your...

    FireWire Cable

I have an interesting cable that came with my web cam. It is USB1 at the computer end, but the other is identical (i.e. exactly the same) as a 4pin firewire. Is this a standard cable (with a name)? Many thanks in advance, R.

    ‘Copy-proof’ CDs not copy proof.

fryke - we are agreeing a lot recently. It may not be possible to hear the difference between mp3 and cd audio when playing on computer attached speakers. However as the stereo equipment gets better the artefacts become more pronounced. It is like a print of a painting. Prints look OK, but...

    What's Your Profession?

I am a freelance business analyst/Software designer (UML). Occaisionally I get my hands dirty with SQL, perl, html, vb, PHP, whatever really to get the job done. Like nkuvu I really do it because it is fun. I get to talk to people about what they want their computers to do, and I have to deliver...

    ‘Copy-proof’ CDs not copy proof.

There is a difference between mp3 and CD audio. I didn't notice until I played them though a reasonable stereo, and now I will only listen to mp3 128 or over (in fact, I only rip at 192). Some tracks still have artefacts at that bit rate as well. However I still predominantly listen to music...

how easy is it to set up more than one mac to one cable modem using Airport

I have done it - an iMac and an iBook to the same base station. It is very easy. You need NAT enabled so that they can share the same external IP. Everything should be automatic. R.

please, a moment of silence :(

I presume that the kernel (colonel) panic screen has been replaced by a GUI version recently. I have never had one, so I can't be sure though. R.

    ‘Copy-proof’ CDs not copy proof.

I agree totally with dlookus. When I buy a CD, the first thing I do is rip a high quality MP3. My iBook is plugged into my stereo and I have an MP3 player on my cellphone. NB it is possible to copy these 'CDs' (for want of a better name). However it is not possible to convert them from one...

    Photoshop 7 icon

Just a thought: 1. How about aliases to classic apps? Can you change the icons on those? 2. Failing that, how about a little script that kicks off the classic app, which you could then change the icon on? Sorry - not on my Mac to test. R.
