    Someone try jaguar?

I read this as any card that supports OpenGL will allow some of the graphics workload to be loaded onto it. Apple are saying that there is enough work so that the above cards will cope with it, but lesser cards may not. This means that whilst lesser cards may give increased speed, they may not...

    The Non-Computer Games Thread

Twister is a great, great game. I know what you mean about Risk - I recently played until 2am, and then had to get up at 5.30am to go into work (still drunk from many bottles of wine - lucky I don't drive to work). It is a game that normally should only go around 7 or 8 rounds and no more...

    Enough about me...

Soccer is my game - I love it so (too?) much. I play a couple of times a week competitively and watch it (live or TV) whenever I can. I am buying a pocket TV just so I can watch the World Cup whilst at work next month. I don't really have a top flight team that I support, just my local pro side...

    The Non-Computer Games Thread

You can't beat Risk, a great one for playing late into the early hours. I also enjoy a little known game called 'The really nasty Horse Racing Game'. This and Risk are great because most of the game is around doing deals 'off the board'. I always take travel scrabble with me when going on...

My Canonscan N1220U works great using Vuescan (found on Versiontracker.com). R.

Interesting! "FireWire" now the official name of the IEEE 1394 connection standard!

iLink isn't 100% 1394 standard and so it would be foolhardy to use that as an official 1394 brand name. It is very close, but some people have found a few hardware incompatibilities out there. R.

    Herve's Bar & Grill

Bank Holidays: FYI The financial markets distinguish bank holidays and exchange holidays in the US. On Bank Holidays it is not possible to settle a trade (take delivery of the cash/asset) and on Exchange holidays it is not possible to do a trade (on the exchange). A public holiday in the US...

Interesting! "FireWire" now the official name of the IEEE 1394 connection standard!

It doesn't say 'the' brand name, just 'a' brand name. I would have thought that this would make it easier for hardware manufacturers to put Firewire on the box. If they currently want to put IEEE 1394 and Firewire on the box, then they would need permission from Apple and the IEEE, but with...

??? What about this: iChat already exists!

Apple could argue that they are not directly in exactly the same industry as the other company - iChat (Apple) is an off the shelf general public product whereas the other one seems to be more of a comms solution for a company. Agreed though - a bit of a stretch IMHO. R.

Bad sectors - how do you fix them?

I had this on my main HDD in my iBook. Norton told me that it was a physically damaged drive, but when I booted into single user mode or Firewire Target the only directory that I couldn't get into was the system directory. I suspected that I had screwed up the file system when the computer ran...

    Avatar icon contest

Why don't we form a nominations committtee, get a few nominations for best avatar, and open it up to voting on a thread? It would be the 'Avatar Oscars' or the 'Avvies'. Just a thought. R.

    Question about "Webhotel"

You will need an ISP that supports ASP for it to work. If it does not then it will be transmitted as text, which is probably what you are seeing. Regarding ISPs that have ASP, I would actually recommend PHP over ASP. There are plenty of threads discussing this topic, so I won't go into it...

SERIOUS potential security flaw in OSX?

If you had a single .DS_Store it would be getting a bit like the win32 registry. I am not a fan of the windows registry. R.

Looking for a good host company

I use www.webcity.co.uk. PHP, MySQL, stats, Perl, redundant, great service for £59 a year. You are limited in bandwidth, but you can purchase more. Unix or NT hosting. Needless to say, I have gone the UNIX route. R.

What keeps you from using OS X exclusively

USB Printer Sharing. However rather than use OS9 on my iBook, I drop off PDFs into an area on my iMac (running OS9 exclusively) and then run upstairs and print. I used to have classic adobe to print from on my toolbar in OSX but I found that OS9 network settings got in the way of my peer to peer...

Virtual PC is very slow in Mac OS X

I use VPC5 on an iBook with 384MB RAM and don't have any problems. Yeah, it is slow, but I have recently been coding up on Visual Studio and have SQL Server 7.0 running without too many speed problems. I did create all the PCs from scratch and did not upgrade any. R.

    My iPod case!

Neat. I have a friend who keeps their digi camera in a sock. When I travel with my iBook it wears a nice fleece. R.

    What's your most painful expense?

I am going through to pain now - just about to go out and buy MS Visual Studio - quite a lot of cash. That is two forms of pain - the cash and the having to purchase a MS product like that. R.
