    Panther Problems!?

Clean install is certainly the way to go. Initially, I did a custom install - and it was very sluggish - much slower than 10.2.4 (something was clearly wrong). Once I decided to do a clean install, it made all the difference - now it goes like a rocket!

Apple web site slows down my Mac !

Well, they've changed it now in favour of the iTunes for Windows deal - and the countdown clock doesn't seem to appear anywhere else. What am I going to do? - now I don't know how many days. hours, minutes and seconds it is until the release of Panther... ;)

    Free iTunes music from Pepsi?

What concerns me is who will benefit most from this deal...? Call me an old cynic (and people do), but what do Pepsico and Apple have in common? Or is it just another very clever marketing/product placement idea on the part of Pepsi, such as we've seen in quite a few movies and TV series...

News on iTMS Europe / Windows

Apple have always neglected Europe, especially the UK - it's never been high on their list of profits - er, I mean priorities - and nothing has changed since Jobs took control back, sad to say.

International iTunes Music Store in October?

Europe has always been a huge Apple market, although somewhat - and inexplicably - neglected by the good folks in Cupertino. I should hope that the Apple Music Store will be up and running in Europe very soon - there is huge demand for it. There area hell of a lot of European Apple...

    Safari with Tabs (v62 - v71)

The tabs are fine, as is the auto-complete feature. I'm now about to move from Netscape 7.0 as my default browser to Safari. It's great! And what was that other browser I used for seven years or so? Oh, yes - Internet Explorer. No need to even mention it now....

I wonder where these Apple terms came from.

I've always understood that the Macintosh name came about because it was a type of apple, and obviously sounded right too. The Newton is a variety of apple, too.... which makes one wonder whether there was ever a plan to use the names of various apples. I don't think we've ever seen an...

Vote for the new icon for our chat client

It actually IS the best one from the design point of view - and, no! - I've never met Trip or any other guys here - all I know about is design that fits the brief.... I personally can't for the life of me see that the alternatives will really work. But - Trip has graciously conceded, and...

Vote for the new icon for our chat client

Only just caught up with this poll. Whichever gets chosen, it's got to work at a smaller size than shown here, and be good enough to be seen with all the other icons I can see in my dock right now. For me, the only one that fulfills those criteria is No 6 - and, at the same time, evokes just...

    Chimera changing it's name

Voyager is great - shades of 'Star Trek' and the two space probes - still out there, sending back information to earth in their twentysixth year. See Voyager, from which (written a year ago): 'The Voyager mission, now in its 25th year, continues its quest to push the bounds of space...

I like it. First time I've seen a signature twenty times the length of the posting! :-)

    adress book & iCal

So if it can't do that simple task, what can iCal do and what can't it do? I had assumed it was similar to the old Claris Organizer (which was later rebranded as Palm Organizer) and could show most things, including recurring dates, daily and hourly scheduling - all linked to an address book...

things needed in the full safari release

Tabbed browsing has become a necessity for me - ever since I migrated from IE 5.2 to Netscape 7.0 and/or Mozilla. I haven't yet received my OS X 10.2 Jaguar disk but hope to be able to upgrade by the end of this week. One question: those of you who have Safari - how does it handle DHTML...

    apple-history.com Updated!

What an informative site! And I just found out there that my very first Mac, the PowerMac 7100, was codenamed Carl Sagan – after one of my all-time heroes, the astronomer, science writer and visionary – and inspiration behind the SETI program. That seems fitting – in the same week that...

Jag mail has destroyed my home folder!!

I'm hoping to receive a copy of OS X 10.2 Jaguar in the next few days. What precautions should I take to avoid the kind of problems encountered above? Obviously, I need to make a complete back-up of my disk – anything else? I've read elsewhere that Apple recommend you shouldn't need to...

    Best Open Source Text Editor???

The best? It's still BBEdit 7.0 which is Mac OS X native, just as good as before, and available from BareBones Software. There is also the BBEdit Lite 6.1 version, free to download, which also runs on OS X. If you happen to be using a Windows PC (as I unfortunately have to at work) you can't...

    No More Classic!??!?!

I think it's certainly true that Quark is still the industry dtp package of choice. Remember, things are slightly different in the UK and Europe - QuarkXPress 5 was only launched here a year ago, and the 5.01 update in July last year. After the mess that surrounded the release of 4.0 a...
