Convert back to 10.1.5

Sadly, a clean install is your only option. I had to do the same, as audio is so completely broken under 10.2 that it makes the less-than-perfect 10.1.5 audio seem ideal in comparison. Very depressing.

    dual processor systems

    >Now, is a single CPU such as the G4 800 good enough for this work or do I just have to go for a dual powerpc? Buy the best system you can afford. Dual processors *are* worth paying extra for, IMHO. Everything runs a little smoother, even if it is only the OS that is coded for MP.

    New Dual G4 and SCSI

For your need, buy the cheapest supported SCSI card you can find. I would suggest a Adaptec PowerDomain 2906, or even an Orangemicro Grappler 906F. Neither card would be adequate if you were attaching disks to it, but for a scanner they should be fine.

    jag killed ethernet, corrupted disks

You don't have an additional PCI network card installed do you? Remove it if so. I had one when I upgraded, and it caused serious problems: Jag decided to assign the settings previously bound to my builtin port to the PCI card, and "self-assign" a DHCP address to the builtin. Not good!

    Audiophile 2496 card + Jaguar = ??

Not long after posting I decided to throw caution to the wind and upgrade without waiting for an answer. Good news: the driver works under Jag. Whew!

    Audiophile 2496 card + Jaguar = ??

I have my copy of Jaguar in hand, but need to know if my M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496 audio card will work under 10.2 before I upgrade. I have heard conflicting reports on the web, and the support drones at M-Audio didn't seem capable of answering the question (I got the auditory equivalent of...

Jag + Radeon 8500 = slow window resize!!!

    >what's the price of a new one - $60k? I think more like $80K! Used will be the only way for me, I think, though Steinways hold their value very well, so I will have to save my pennies for a long time either way. >I do hope this is a driver issue, but now I'm worried you might be right...

Jag + Radeon 8500 = slow window resize!!!

    >I really think it is a driver issue. Yes, that could easily be the case. 10.1.x has had lots of driver issues with Geforce4 MX & Ti cards, for instance. It would be sad but unsurprising if Jag continued the trend of video driver issues. >P.S. Does your user name suggest you play piano...

    New Dual Powermacs

I think that for now at least Apple is directing people who want quiet systems to the iMac. Power users must, alas, put up with fan noise. I have read accounts of various users modifying their G4s with new fans, carboard mufflers, fan grille mods, etc., all in order to get a quieter machine...

    Which One?

If you ever want to upgrade the system beyond a larger HD or more RAM, get a PowerMac. For example: If as you say you want to try your hand at 3D, you will likely want to upgrade your video card from time to time.

Jag + Radeon 8500 = slow window resize!!!

It's hard to say with out seeing your system first hand, but I would tend to think that your G4 450 is the bottleneck rather than either the 8500 or Jag. Perhaps what you are seeing is the best that card can do on that system. If it were me I would test the card in another (preferably faster)...

    Adobe Acrobat in OSX question...

From the Adobe.com web site: "Because the AdobePS printer driver doesn't offer native support for Mac OS X, you cannot use Adobe Acrobat Distiller in Mac OS X Native mode." Re: native PS driver for OS X; I would imagine it is in the works, but I haven't heard much about it.

Is Mac hardware really that slow?

    >So would a dual G4 1.4Ghz with DDr ram be outperformed by a similarly priced PC? It really depends on the task. It is possible that the PC will be faster at certain tasks, but I think the real question to ask yourself is, "Is the Mac fast enough for me?" >I'm just wondering whether the...

    How much RAM?

I thought that the built in memory could only be upgrade by apple, with only one slot being available for the customer to use/upgrade? Yes, Macs usually ship with one memory slot populated. You can, however, remove this memory if desired. It is not soldered or otherwise permanently...

    linux-like system monitors?

I think this is sort of what you seek, though it is much simpler than the app in your screenshot. I am at work on a PeeCee and can't check to be sure at the moment: http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=15809&db=macos The linux app in your screenshot looks very cool. OS X could...

What is your favorite UNIX shell?

    >why do people like zsh? Because it is the emacs of shells: every little whizbang shell feature in existence is a builtin or option. It also has the longest and most numerous man(1) pages (and UNIX geeks like man(1) pages). Check it out: http://zsh.sunsite.dk/ Oh, my vote is for ksh...

    Laser printers?

Based on my experience, and that of others I know, I have come to the conclusion that inkjets are simply not abe to produce good quality output. In this regard I have yet to see one that can print text even in the same ballpark as the worst laser printer I've ever seen. You may be able to...
