ATI 8500 vs ATI 9000 vs ATI 9700

    >Anyone know the difference between all three cards? The 9700 will be the new top-of-the-line ATI consumer card when it is released; the 9000 will be the budget model. I would recommend avoiding the older 8500 unless the price goes very low (like under $100), otherwise I would find it hard to...

    First mac buying question

An old iMac such as the one you describe will be slow under OS X, though since everyone's definition of 'too slow' is different, it is hard to say if it will be too slow for you. As long as you're OK with that, your plan sounds good. Yes, maxing out on memory would be a good idea. RAM is...

How to use MacOS X's Built-in Software RAID?

You should be able to simply install another disk of the same capacity (preferably not on the same IDE controller), boot up, and add the disk to your boot disk to form a RAID 1 mirror set as per the post above. However, software RAID adds overhead, and I think it may disappoint you w.r.t...

    iPod / iTunes problem

This is a guess, but it is my suspicion that the current (v1.1) software for the iPod is not quite 100% compatible with iTunes3, or vice versa. It is widely known that a v1.2 iPod software update is in the works, which probably includes support for the new 20GB iPods, iTunes3, and may include...

Mac osx do not see my ethernet card

The green LED probably only indicates that the card is getting power, or that a link is detected. It does not necessarily imply that your OS can see the card. This article may interest you: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/OSX/os_x_network_cards.html

does anyone know about ethernet pc cards working on mac

Plug them in and try them out by all means, but ethernet cards are so cheap these days you might save yourself some headaches and surf around eBay for one that works natively under OSX. I found a Farallon FastEtherTX 10/100 PCI there for $9 that requires no additional driver install under OSX...

Apply 17" display fades in and out randomly

You mean the image fades to black and then back again? Sounds like a power issue, or perhaps a dying tube. Either way, it will probably be cheaper to get a new display than it would be to repair the old one.

    Does RAM brand matter?

Brand does not usually matter much, but I recommend avoiding the really cheap stuff. I always buy from www.mushkin.com. Very reliable memory, and good service as well.

Help me understand video cards and dual display!

Yes, 'dual head' implies the ability to display a very wide desktop over two displays with one card. I believe the ATIs you mention do that, and the Geforce4Ti available from Apple definitely does. Actually you could use a dual head card *and* your PCI card and have three displays, if you want.

    Need SCSI card for HD

Even if it were compatible with OSX, your old Apple OEM (ATTO) SCSI card would be a poor choice for your Ultra160 drive as the card would not support the full speed your drive is capable of. To get your money's worth out of an Ultra160 drive, get an Ultra160 card, such as the PowerDomain 29160 I...

    Mac OS X verbose mode?

Type this in the terminal: sudo nvram boot-args="-v" You will lose this the next time you update the OS or reset the PRAM.

    Need SCSI card for HD

According to my research, an Adaptec PowerDomain 29160 would be a good choice. It supports deep sleep under OSX, among other things, which is nice. As far as I know the Atto cards still don't support this. From what I hear it is advisable to jumper your disk to be SCSI ID 0 to avoid some...

Anyone booting from a SCSI disk under 10.1.5?

I am considering the purchase of a SCSI adapter and disk to replace the stock IDE system disk in my dual G4 Quicksilver. The cards that interest me at the moment are the Adaptec Powerdomain 29160 and the Atto UL3S. Is anyone booting a 10.1.5 system from a disk attached to one of these (or...

    Apple Pro Keyboard kicks arse!

You're probably referring to the late-model "bat" mouse, an ADB mouse that followed the first (conventionally shaped) NeXT mouse in around '92 when NeXT moved to ADB for keyboards and mice. The bat mouse was basically a round mouse (shaped somewhat like the much-maligned "hockey puck" iMac mouse...

    ADC graphics cards for QE?

You can't purchase an ADC card from ATI or Nvidia. New ADC cards are available only from Apple, either in a new system or as an upgrade kit (the Gf4 Ti card was recently made available in this way). Used cards can be found on eBay.

    Pro keyboard disassembly

I am wondering if anyone has a link to a take-apart guide for the translucent USB Apple Pro Keyboard, or some suggestions regarding disassembly. Because of the translucent top and bottom of his thing, I can see all the cruft that is collecting inside it (all over, not just under the keys), and...
