    Slow computer...

My ulitity, Mac HelpMate can clean out logs, caches and swapfiles, just like Barhar mentioned in his other post. It can be automated to do this on a schedule as well.

    safari secure connection

Unlike Netscape and Firefox, Safari has hooks into your keychain for SSL certificate validation. It is a great feature, but when it goes bad, it can have strange effects. Clear the contents of ~/Library/Keychains and log in again...

    Software Update will not start

Blinded by data...I really like that! You're a poet, as well as a Mac guru. Nice! I can just visualize swupd's windshield wipers swishing off the bits from deploy.akamail.net. Yeah, the Software Update Server really needs better user feedback....

    Webmin vs Server Admin

The same could be said for setting up the Web Server and Postfix and SpamAssasin and Mailman. I love Webmin but I use it exclusively for Webalizer and a few other dinky things, but would use it more if I were using an Mac OS X Workstation as a server. Server Admin will do the same thing with...

    FTP folder dilemma

Sounds like the ftp-stephen folder might have been made a share point at one time and you have the sharepoints and home directory option set in FTP access. Check it out.

    Server Settings Problem

Run the 10.2.8 Server Combo updater. That should fix it.

    File Sharing Disabled

If this is Tiger Server, Root only can affect the local Netinfo Domain. Try logging in as a Local or Diradmin instead.

    SMB mount permissions.

It's in Sharing in WorkGroup Manager. Simply navigate to the folder, then set the permissions under "General." If necessary, cascade them down using the Action (Gear) menu. However, the DRWX permissons might indicate that this "share" is part of or actually a user's home directory, so be...

    Trying to interpret Server Manual

For Mobility and Portable Home Directories, it only makes sense to do it by managing a computer list with the computer accounts of your mobile computers in it. Managing mobility by workgroup is counterproductive.

    Software Update will not start

There's also a command-line tweak to get an unmanaged Mac to use a Software Update Server process. My application, Mac HelpMate, has a GUI for making this quite the easy task!

Mobil Home Directories + Logging into the Server

Michael's got a good point, but there's a real easy way to find out what's happening during the stall. SSH into the server, then run: >$ sudo fs_usage > blah.txt after a while, quit, shop the ssh session and examine the contents of the file. That should reveal the source of contention...

Why do extra letters keep appearing when typing?

Create an additional user account and login as that user and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't it could point to a corrupt preference in your home directory. My utility, Mac HelpMate, can check for corrupt preferences.

Get Info - Open With - Not working

Use my app, Mac HelpMate, and run the clean caches choice. This will remove/reset the launch services database, which can fix issues like the one you're having.

    NEED HELP---FAST! HD Kaput!

Boot off an installer CD, use the restore feature of Disk Utility to clone the data from the failing drive to the new drive, then do an archive and install over the top, works good, except for Photoshop, which loses the capability to double-click after an achive and install. However, if you...

    Best FTP Client for OSX

Transmit is an awesome FTP client. However, Transmit is not free. If you need Kerberos Capability, you'll have to get Fetch. Lately, my favorite has been Cyberduck: http://cyberduck.ch. Not only is it Open-Source and free, it's also a STFP client as well as FTP client and supports Growl...

keyboard shortcut / command line for rotating screen /display

Wow, you have asked for two very difficult things. You'd have to assume that the Displays system preference was scriptable, which it isn't. You might have a hook to the screen orientation through System events, but I don't know. As somewhat of an AppleScript whiz, I would look at your second...

    Items Necessary on Boot Volume?

None of the folders you mentioned can be moved without some low level hacking. Symbolic links and aliases work quite well for /Library and /Applications and /Users. However, there's a lot of invisible stuff that's required. My utility, Mac HelpMate, has a feature to show/hide the invisible...

Powerbook gone crazy Disk Warrior trick?????

I'd put your powerbook into target disk mode so it acts like a firewire disk and attach it to another mac, where you can copy off the data you need before reinstalling everything. You'll need to find another mac with enough free hard disk space to back up your files, and a 6pin to 6pin firewire...

Download ffmpegX from versiontracker. It handles dozens of video formats and might be able to help. You can try it but if you use it you should pay the $15 shareware fee.
