I dont think the problem is from your cord. My guess would be it's either from the iPod itself or iTunes that does not recognize your iPod. Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall iTunes?? -

You said you "tried" to restore. Did you actually restore? Did your friend have problem with it before selling it to you?? Restore, maybe downgrade the firmware and see what happens. Most of the time, that kind of trick works -
