VFD (or LCD) attached via serial port (usb to serial)

Hmm. There was no manual. Sorry my question offended you somehow.

VFD (or LCD) attached via serial port (usb to serial)

Thanks for your reply. I have a USB to Serial adapter and the appropriate driver. ZTerm DOES recognize the port. So don't I have a terminal app that's communicating via USB? The real meat of my question is not how to connect, but what to send.

VFD (or LCD) attached via serial port (usb to serial)

Hi All, I got a Vacuum Flourescent display (VFD) for a Basic Stamp microcontroller. It's working fine with the microcontroller, but I'm experimenting with sending commands to it directly through my mac usb port. (Instead of using the microcontroller.) So far: 1) I have power to the VFD using a...

Cube won't boot after 10.4.6 upgrade

I'd read about this double-boot thing for this update. But I was experiencing a wouldn't-even-reboot-once issue. Glad yours is running fine, though. I'll probably try again. Nixgeek -- I agree that patience is a virtue. I just can't imaging what my processor (albeit only 867 MHz G4) would be...

Cube won't boot after 10.4.6 upgrade

So I had a similar problem today, and ended up reinstalling from the DVD, since 10.4.6 seemed to hang up on reboot (on the apple logo / spinner screen) indefinitely. The thing is -- there was *no* hard drive activity whatsoever for more than 5 minutes. So my question is -- if there's no hard...

    MacBook: Heat, Noise, Battery Life

You're right, it's worth considering if my main gripe is power consumption. However, the PowerBooks are so much more solidly built. I find the iBooks flimsy compared the the aluminum models. Whenever I see an iBook in the store, there's invariably a key or two missing. Never seen that on a...

    MacBook: Heat, Noise, Battery Life

Yeah, I raised my eyebrow when I heard him say that. I mean, 0.27 units of performance? What's the scale? And my concerns are not just battery use, but heat (I could fry an egg on my 12" PB) and the din of the fan (like being in a wind tunnel). I'd gladly sacrifice some performance for...

    MacBook: Heat, Noise, Battery Life

I originally assumed the whole performance-per-watt benefit of the Intel chip would equal improved battery life. But from what I'm reading, and Apple's ommission of battery life from their marketing, I'm less hopeful. Buy yes, we'll just have to wait and see!

    MacBook: Heat, Noise, Battery Life

Well, no one's chimed in on this, but I found a good thread here: http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2006/1/10/2436 Hope that helps someone.

MySQL PHP Socket error with Tiger 10.4.4

Hi All, I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.4 last night, and restarted my MySQL database server as always. It works fine from the command line. BUT When I try to connect to it from Apache/PHP, from my own PHP scripts and from phpMyAdmin, I get the following error: phpMyAdmin says: #2002 - The server...

    MacBook: Heat, Noise, Battery Life

Hi All, I own a 12" PowerBook G4, and as I'm sure you all know -- it gets LOUD, hot and has horrible battery life. Since Apple hasn't posted battery life for the new MacBook Pro (even if they did, would I take it seriously?) does anyone have any predictions on this (and the noise and heat...

Configure Apache and htaccess for different PHP versions

Hi All, I need to keep php 4 installed on my machine (OS X Tiger 10.4.3) for testing purposes, but would like to experiment with php 5 on a specific subdirectory. Is there a way to set httpd.config to load both php 4 and 5 modules, and then on a directory-by-directory basis use htaccess to...

Landscape Design software for OS X (other than SketchUp)?

Ha! And to illustrate my point, the topic of this thread generated an ad at the top of the page for a landscape design package… for Windows only! This IS an OS X forum, is it not? ;-)

Landscape Design software for OS X (other than SketchUp)?

Thanks for your reply, Perfessor, Yes, Mac is aimed at professionals for design, but when you think of Mac's newer direction in the home consumer market (i.e. iLife) seems as though that's a huge untapped market.

Landscape Design software for OS X (other than SketchUp)?

Hi All, I've searched far and wide for landscaping software for Mac OS X and have only been able to come up with: SketchUp -- great but too expensive. More professionally oriented than what I'm looking for. 3D Home Landscape Design 5 by Riverdeep -- awful reviews on Amazon.com And...
