I'm having the same problem. That's why I registered here today, to hopefully find someone that knew what was happening with Adobe Reader 8.1. Using OS 10.4.11 (for a long time) with no problems. Just did software update from Apple + downloaded new Acrobat (I thought) but it was Adobe Reader...
