It seems FireWire is the answer, Bought the new cable today. camera has to be in video playback mode and the mighty mac does the rest.

cheers delta, I have seen the list but it also mentions that the list is not 100% accurate and some others may also work, hopefully mine included. there is an article on this forum site which mentions the exact same problem, this was subsequently resolved but did not mention how....handy...
