This turned out to be an 'organic interface' problem. This :-
ssh -P 443 -X craigl@192.168.1.2 should have been this :-
ssh -p 443 -X craigl@192.168.1.2
it was trying to ssh to host 443. Doh!
Using MB air and latest lion. Some prints to help diagnosis :-
