Resetting the PRAM did the trick! Thank you. Could anyone explain what PRAM and NVRAM are? These are unfamiliar to me, I've been a mostly a PC user and tech for many years, so it would be nice to understand what those handle in order to do my own future troubleshooting.

Thanks for the reply. Sadly rebooting doesn't help. Maybe 1 out of every 5 reboots, the login screen is at normal resolution. Once it fully logs in, the resolution goes back to normal every time. Nothing out of the ordinary in the display preferences. Really strange problem :\

I have a late 2011 model Macbook Pro. I just finished letting it install the latest EFI firmware update, and now after the reboot I get horribly low resolution at the login screen and at the boot selection screen. Has anyone seen this problem before? Here are some pictures: http://imgur.com/a/3PIkE
