    NIS, NFS, amd and Panther

Not too many folks using NIS and am-utils, I guess. Well, I e-mailed the amd developers and Ahmon Dancy was kind enough to reply. He told me the version of amd that shipped with Mac OS X was broken and to build the latest version available from ftp.am-utils.org. I did that and it works great!

    NIS, NFS, amd and Panther

Howdy! I am trying to setup a G5 running Panther on a fairly standard UNIX network using NIS as the directory service, NFS to share files and amd to handle the automounting. I was able to get NIS working without much trouble by following the superb directions on Marcel Bresink's website...

    lemon law?

One of my friends told me what turned out to be the most useful advice. The customer relations group is who you want to talk to when you're not getting anywhere with the product specialists or other technically oriented AppleCare people. I didn't get the entire system replaced as I was hoping...

    lemon law?

I suppose, technically, they haven't tried to fix it three times yet, they tried to fix it twice and this is the third try. And I may be wishfully thinking about a G5... I'd be happy with a working G4. But still, has anyone else been through this with Apple?

    lemon law?

Howdy! I love my Mac and I really enjoy boasting how much better Macs are than PCs... but lately I've been silent because my PowerMac G4 is not behaving. I posted earlier about a dissapearing volume that turned out to be a crashed hard drive. Well, that was the second hard drive to die in...

    Volume Disappeared

Last night I tried another nice backup program called Synk. It works beautifully! You manually create the cron job, but that's easy enough. It ran reliably and has some nice features. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/7842 I also e-mailed Drive Savers. We'll see what...

    Volume Disappeared

Thanks all for your helpful advise. I gutted an external firewire drive and replaced its hard drive with mine, but I got the same errors. Unpluging and reconnecting the firewire drive didn't help any of the utilities to better see it. I also tried a utility called "Data Rescue X" which is...

    Volume Disappeared

Oh, that's what you meant. I never even thought of replacing the hard drive of an external firewire hard drive before. I will give that a try too! I just got home and tried Norton Disk Doctor without success... it doesn't even see the disk on the bus! But for some reason Disk Utility can...

    Volume Disappeared

That's an interesting idea... it's an internal drive, so I can't connect via firewire directly, but if I booted in target disk mode, do you suppose I could see it with disk warrior from another computer? I will try this out tonight!

    Volume Disappeared

Thanks for your replies. A couple other folks I've spoken with have recommended Western Digital as well. They must be pretty good! Actually, I had a spare 10 GB WD HD collecting dust in an old linux box, so I scavenged it and put it in my PowerMac. So, my computer is up and running again...

    Volume Disappeared

Howdy! This morning, I was checking e-mail on my G4 Desktop running OS 10.2, when all of a sudden the rebooting circle of lines appeared and the system was locked up. So, after unsuccessfully trying to force quit, I went for the power button. I turned the system on again and tried to boot...
