    Unix, X11, Fink, X11 SDK.

So after the KDE thing, then I tried the GNOME bundle, that works too except it crashes when I try to launch a KDE app. GNOME notices that I have Mozilla for XWindows installed. ALSO, they all crash my old Powerbook when running in Rootless window mode. Full Screen is the way to go even...

Thanks Cat and Viro, your help got it all sorted out in my head, fink's error messages gradually made more and more sense and now.... drum roll please... Unix, X11, Fink, X11 SDK.

Doesn't matter about Apple's X11. I tried using it and Fink gave me all kinds of grief saying this and that weren't going to work. Eventually I gave up and renamed /usr/X11R6 to /usr/X11R6.old and downloaded XFree86 for Mac OS X/Darwin from Sourceforge. Then fink was happy and I have been...

    troubles with fink

Progress! OK, I see what happened. When I first installed fink, I told it I had another X11 environment. But I didn't have it yet. So I just got the virtual placeholder. But I located a copy of the Apple X11 beta for 10.2, and installed that, and now I can launch basilisk. Hurray! Thanks...

    troubles with fink

No I didn't. I just installed xfree86. Sorry no initialization stuff, I get errno 2 which is "no X in PATH". Sorry now this thread is how to install X11 properly! Why can't these fancy installers add X to my PATH for me? There is nothing about it in the startx man page, socan someone tell...

    troubles with fink

Hi UNIX fans I have a spare machine with 10.2. Installed Dev Tools. Installed fink. Tried to test it out by getting BasiliskII. The Date & Time were not current and as fink was installing all the xFree86 stuff I saw a few error messages regarding the right date scroll past. Basilisk doen't...

    Mastering the NetInfo database

Well, the thing is, you can't log in as anything on these machines, because the problem with them is they have one user that is not an administrator, no root user enabled, OR the user has changed some things around in NetInfo Manager and things like shortnames don't match. The usual fix has...

PM9600, what's the white slot for between the memory slots?

The OrangeMicro cards are PCI. Have you got any spare slots? I prefer to see a USB/Firewire/ATA-133 card installed before something to run Win95. The equivalent of BIOS is part PRAM, part Open Firmware. (Learn more about O.F. at http://bananajr6000.apple.com/ ) Inside the ROM chips are the...

Os 9 Ftp Server, File Server, Etc.

We used to use AppleShare IP where I work, all the way to v6.3.3. MacDNS used to come with it, I think, but we thought it was no good for some reason and used QuickDNS by Men and Mice(?). This worked well. Be sure to keep an eye on your Mail Server if you use it for that... the anti-spam...

    Mastering the NetInfo database

Cool, thanks. Since I posted I figured out some more about nicl, so I can get to groups/wheel and groups/admin but the next stage is to figure out how to make modifications without destroying everything! So will these ni* commands work when booted into Single-User mode?

HELP! Need reformatting help using command line OS X

you can only repair permissions on a valid OS X bootable volume. If you are clicking on you hard drive icon in Disk Utility but can't repair permissions, and the machine boots up into UNIX (it's BSD UNIX, not Linux!!) then some crucial files are missing, renamed, moved or mangled. This does mean...

    Mastering the NetInfo database

Hi folks. It would appear to me that many of the problems that my clients get themselves into would not require reinstalling OS X so often if I had a better grip on repairing their Netinfo database; I am gathering information... so the 1st question is: What's the best way to use the command...

HELP! Need reformatting help using command line OS X

You've gone without your Mac for a month?? They key problem here is that you can't boot off the OS X CD; this allows you to reset the password. Can you boot from any CDs? Unless your CD drive or other part of the computer is faulty there should be no reason why the Mac freezes when...

    Beginner AppleScript question

Hello there The problem we have is related to AppleEvents. We have scraped together enough knowledge to write a script that automatically copies a specific file to a mounted server, and use iDo script scheduler to run it daily. The file, already compressed, is about 850MB. Problem is...

    Command line permission problems

did you do a "repair permissions" on the 10.3 machine? can you do a "ls -a" so we can see the drwxrwxrwx lines? can you use rlogin to get to that machine, or even ftp? maybe the problem is with afp over TCP/IP.
