    linux vs OSX performance comparissons?

Oh yes, one note I forgot to include, I prefer xfce over the bloated GNOME/KDE. One good way to test speed would be Apache, I guess, but I can't install that right now since I have to do stuff on Mac OS 9.

    Darwin on x86

On an x86 box, I'd go for Linux -- better hardware support and more software. I don't know of any advantage of Darwin/x86 over FreeBSD/x86 as well.

    printer queues anyone?

Hmmm.. Mac OS X doesn't seem to quite use all of the Unix tools out there. I too have run into this same problem. Since I can't share my printer just yet, I have some users shh into my system and print from there. Alas, I only realized recently that lpr doesn't work.

    Convert HFS to UFS?

I think UFS is case sensitive, whereas HFS+ is not. So whereas in HFS+ you could have only one "My Document.doc", in UFS you could have "My Document.doc" AND "My document.doc". I've also noticed that UFS seems to have issues with Classic installation. I couldn't make Classic run perfectly...

is osx a true unix system

Well, there is support for the mouse in the CLI in Linux. They use it for copying/pasting code across virtual screens or within the same screen. :) Oh, the one-button mouse is simple, and simplicity has its advantages. The second and third mouse buttons simply makes things faster, but that...

is osx a true unix system

Mac OS X is, if not fully, then partially, Unix. Otherwise, Apple could be sued for saying so. :D I, too, don't know the intricacies between monolithic kernels and microkernels. But try asking your friend this, "Is Linux UNIX?" The answer is no. Linux is UNIX-like, but is not UNIX. It's a...

    SSH in 10.0.1

A shorter equivalent would by ssh username@host :) SSH client detects the cipher type automatically, right? I'd like to know how to set the cipher type for the SSH server. :)

sharing printers whith mac os x ?

I just found out that USB Printer Sharing isn't available in Mac OS X yet. Perhaps in a future release. :) I do hope that Apple integrates SMB to their network services. As much as I'm ok with buying a program like DAVE or Sharity, I'd rather have apps for free. After all, if Samba is Open...

Human Interface Standards, the Dock and More...

I guess the question of some users was "Why did Apple remove it?" [b] I agree. Control panels have always been a cause for system software conflicts and crashes. But the feature I wanted was direct access to a certain part of System Preferences. :) For example, System Preferences >...

sharing printers whith mac os x ?

I'd like to know too. So far, I still haven't found a way to share my HP895Cxi.

    Global View Options

How do you set ALL windows (say per hard disk) to use the Global View Options? As of the moment, I have to specify each window I open to use the Global Views instead. This is a bit irritating. I know that it was in Mac OS 8.x that View Options was introduced and the exact problem was present...

    Stealth Vs Closed Ports

Interesting! I learned something new today. :) A computer with all ports closed and few open (say HTTP and FTP) is by far difficult to infiltrate, unless of course there were certain unknown exploits that were done. Keeping the software up to date should be a good way of improving security...

Java is crap in OS X. Some things are 5-10 times native slower than in Classic

Doesn't IE5 use Apple's MRJ? I do know that older versions of IE (pre version 4?) used MS's own implementation of the JVM. In version 4, if I'm correct, IE allowed you to choose which JVM to use. [b] I've not tried Java on Mac OS X yet but I find Java on Linux kidna ok. I use IBM's...

Human Interface Standards, the Dock and More...

Umm.. Not quite. Contextual menus are the menus that "pop-out" when you right-click on an object. The ones being referred to are hierarchical menus, if I'm not mistaken. Apple Menu Options in System 7.5 provided this feature. Prior to System 7.5, there were third party programs that would give...

    cc/gcc not found

The Developers Package takes up roughly 613MB of space. I wish Apple would have given us the option to customize the installation so we could choose what apps/tools we want installed.

Networking with OS X and Windows

I'm not yet familiar with the intricacies of network programs, so I'm not sure if what I say is completely true, but it is my guess that FTP has less overhead than CIFS (particularly Sharity in this case) and AppleTalk. It isn't as easy, but it might be faster. Oh, you might also want to...

    linux vs OSX performance comparissons?

I tried out Darwin on another PPC box (G4/400 256MB RAM) without Aqua and it was kinda fast. However, I wouldn't know how to rate speed on a pure CLI environment. I doubt SETI@Home would be a good benchmark. Mac OS X's sluggishness is perhaps attributed to Aqua and other layers on top of...
