Upon further research, it seems Apple claims that you can't use their keyboard shortcuts PreferencePane to open applications. oh well, that sucks. For me, that was the best thing about a macro program like Quickeys. Am I striking out here?

I know about that. It lets you create key commands WITHIN an app, commands that are already in a menu, but I'm interested in key commands that open programs. for instance a key command to open iCal, instead of mousing to the dock.

I used to use Quickeys all the time, mostly to open an app with a simple key command, rather than to mouse my way to it. I haven't used it nor upgraded for a while, because I felt it might be interfering with some apps that I used (it had to be open all the time in OSx, unlike before in OS9)...
