The original clam-shell type.. where the modem lead goes in, some of the plastic has broken away.. can this be fixed without replacing the whole logic board? Can this be fixed by taking apart and replacing the modem port with a generic one? It's a dog to take apart so any thoughts will be...

Err.. bad RAM is bad RAM.. its got nothing to do with RAM hungry apps.. the system won't like it.. difficult to test as you will have 2x256mb of Apples RAM in there.. and it ain't the best... do yourself a favour and get some extra RAM so you can take out the old RAM and test with.. even 2x128mb...

check your images are in RGB and not CMYK.

and to add.. run repair disk permissions in disk utility

my first hunch is that you have a permissions issue.

the lack of RAM will account for slow start-up of apps.. 256mb is a pitiful amount.. 512mb ain't much better.. 768mb is ok :D
