trouble connecting vista and OS X

This is a somewhat well-known issue in the Linux crowd 'cos it breaks there for the same reason. Thanks Microsoft!! The short version of the answer is that, with Vista, the NTLM negotiation is set a bit more strictly than pretty much anyone else in the industry, for all the good that'll do...

    g5 dual 2.5 mac won't boot

I had a G5 (single 1.8, but still) do that recently after a failed firmware update, and the fix that worked for me was to pull the CMOS battery and leave it unplugged for 24 hours or so. Afterward, MacOSX complained bitterly about the clock being set to somewhere in 1969, but after resetting...

Parallels Desktop (was Parallels Workstation) review/interview...

I certainly use Parallels on a near-daily basis. It's just as discussed in the interview you've posted on blogspot - it is a huge productivity boost. One of the things I do for work is maintain/build on a WinPE-based tools disc (I work in a test-lab environment that is 98% Windows-only). With...

    Firmware update failure rendered a G5 non-booting.

Thanks to everyone for your helpful responses.... :) All kidding aside, I'm happy to report a success with this. Leaving it unpowered like that over night did the trick. Of course, MacOSX was displeased with the date being sometime in 1969 as a result, and SoftwareUpdate insists that there's...

    Firmware update failure rendered a G5 non-booting.

I was in the process of building a PowerMac G5 (1x1.6GHz) at work, and SoftwareUpdate came up with the G5 uniprocessor firmware update (5.1.5f2, if memory serves), and I cheerfully let it pull it down and run. The process is to let the installer shut down the machine, and then power it back up...

memory upgrade problem on dual G5...

Yeah, there are (were) three different types on-board, with the "PC3200U-25440"s being the problem... I even went so far as to pull the existing RAM, and put those two in by themselves... I didn't even get a startup chime. Plus, the power LED on the front was doing what looked like a "blink...

memory upgrade problem on dual G5...

So, I'm the proud owner of a dual 2.5 G5 tower, which I want to upgrade the memory in. I got these two 1GB sticks that no matter how many times I'd reseat them, MacOSX would never see the extra 2GB of memory. It does see the existing 1.5GB worth of DIMMS correctly, and shows the slots with the...

Installed programs not present under X11?

By default, X11 uses quartz-wm for a WindowManager. You can use ps to find its pid and kill it off. I ran into this with enlightenment, but you should be able to get blackbox to run once you get quartz-wm out of the way. Of course, things (in X11) look really odd with no window manager running...

    Problems with console-mode on MacOSX

I recently got a MacMini which I immediately put into service as a Web Server. Of course, they ship with only 256MB, so turning off the GUI was interesting to me in order to leave as much memory for Apache as possible. I pretty quickly came across the "nvram boot-args=-v" to avoid the GUI boot...

How lazy can you get with an airport?

Funny, I have. I don't answer the phone when I'm in there, and I find myself setting IM to "Away" when I am. Just doesn't seem right... :D Thanks to WiFi, though, my "main" machine has become my PowerBook on my coffee table..

    Commercial Wi-fi zones?

I'm not real fond of Starbux anyway, so I was thrilled to discover that my local independent coffeehouse had free wireless internet (unlimited). So, you might look around and see if there's an alternative like that where you are. As for Borders... well that's unfortunate. I'm not a big fan of...

    New ads? Not cool

These are some good, if flawed, points. With TV, there is no input from the viewer. The viewer does not add to the value of the show (content), so it's very much a provider->consumer arrangement. The folks that spend the time helping others do contribute to the site through their efforts, while...

Will there be interference with a 2.4Ghz wireless router and 2.4Ghz cordless phone

Possibly. I had all kinds of problems with Airport and the Seimens Gigaset wireless phones. I've since switched to using a GSM mobile provider for all my voice traffic, so I haven't investigated further to see if different channels on the phone helped, or if there was any way to sort it out...

    Apple Sticker on your car?

Mine is on my car. It might be fun if those of us that have them post photos (along the lines of "show us your desktop/face/ride" threads). Here's mine: http://homepage.mac.com/kenkl/macosx.com.clippings/PICT0587.jpg :)

    Get in on the iBox...

So would I. But the Dual 1.2G version of the thing weighs in at $1500. Thats sans video, memory and harddrive. Adding memory, harddrive and video brings it to about the same price as the real thing from Apple. Actually, I think it's probably quite a bit worse of a deal, considering that the bus...

    The Incredible Machine

heh.. I guess it is. Although, i got the spec wrong. The 2400c was 4.4 pounds according to Apple. But the rest of it... you're right. That' probably why I found the 12" book so appealing. Ok, let me try again... The 20th Anniversary Macintosh. Oh wait. That would be the iMac, wouldn't it? :D

Safari Beta 2 (v73) officially out!

Well, this is all very well and cool, but they seem to have broken a number of keybindings that exist in every other browser. Namely, CMD+left and CMD+right to go forward and backward have been replaced with CMD+[ and CMD+] respectively... WTF? I don't get why this had to be done this way.. :(...

    Device listing

Why Applescript? The script would be more complex ("tell finder this, tell finder that, tell finder the other thing"), and would not be nearly as flexible, or portable, or fast. In fact, wouldn't an Applescript version of this require that someone be logged in (so that Finder could run)? The...

    Device listing

That's cool. I didn't know about disktool -l... But I still don't see my ejected (but still attached) iPod. I'll bet that the iPod is being a little smarter about this, appearing disconnected on the FW bus, than the normal FW drive.. It's a useful trick, though. I just lost 37GB of mp3's to a...
