Small 10.4 Server - eMac, Mac mini, or PowerMac G4?

You're right, that makes up the price difference between them. But most of the Xserve G4s on eBay come with Panther/Jaguar Server, but I need Tiger Server (portable home folders). Michael

Small 10.4 Server - eMac, Mac mini, or PowerMac G4?

Hey, like I said, it was just an idea - nothing I was going to do! Michael

It was just a thought. Michael

Small 10.4 Server - eMac, Mac mini, or PowerMac G4?

Either one, haven't decided yet, and probably won't be buying until a couple of months. Another interesting idea would be: waiting for the Intel version of Mac OS X Server. If Apple is smart, they'd make it without the dongling to their hardware as this would attract many small/medium-sized...

The main candiated would be: PowerMac G4 (dual) + SATA Xserve G4 Haven't decided for one yet. Michael

Small 10.4 Server - eMac, Mac mini, or PowerMac G4?

I don't think I really need a G5 processor. PowerMac G4s with dual processors sell for pretty reasonable prices on eBay. But I haven't found any Xserve G4s for much less than $1500 on eBay yet. Getting a SATA card for the PowerMac is a good idea. I did a little research, there is no huge...

    Backup Software for 10.4 Server

It currently is 10GB. Will probably become a lot more in serveral months. I also want a solution which I'm flexible with; BRU or Retrospect seem like a good choice. Michael

Small 10.4 Server - eMac, Mac mini, or PowerMac G4?

How long does a typical hard drive last? If I buy the PowerMac from eBay, I will probably replace it's hard drive with a new, larger one. If I'm buying one anyway, what would the price difference between a server ATA hard drive and a standard ATA hard drive be? Michael

Small 10.4 Server - eMac, Mac mini, or PowerMac G4?

Should I get a hard drive that is suitable for 24/7 use / servers? I think I'll be going with a used PowerMac G4. Michael

Small 10.4 Server - eMac, Mac mini, or PowerMac G4?

The used Xserve G4s and PowerMac G5s are still pretty expensive. But the PowerMac G4s are available at eBay for less than $700 (This one is a dual 1GHz with 1.5GB RAM, it even includes a display, and sold for less than $650). Thanks for the link! Michael

Small 10.4 Server - eMac, Mac mini, or PowerMac G4?

Will there be any problem because these consumer Macs are not intended to run 24/7 like a server would (processor dying eary, etc.). Other than the OpenDirectory database, no. Michael

Small 10.4 Server - eMac, Mac mini, or PowerMac G4?

I am going to be setting up a Mac OS X Server on a small network (about five clients) soon. It will need to provide DHCP/DNS, OpenDirectory authentication, AFP (for the users' home folders), and iChat to the local network. Maybe VPN. Possibly FTP to the internet. They haven't decided yet what...

    Backup Software for 10.4 Server

A standard MacOS X server installation, and the home folders of currently six users and their email. So not more than 10GB. Firewire 400. But because it'll be backing up at night, the speed shouldn't be a problem. I planned to have versioned backup. Full backup once a week, and then every...

    Backup Software for 10.4 Server

OK. I guess I'll be going with BRU or Retrospect. Are there no free/shareware programs that are able to backup live files (which active databases are)? Michael

    Backup Software for 10.4 Server

Thanks. BRU seems like what I was looking for. But it costs almost $400 for the server and one client, so not much less than Retrospect. I also looked at NetVault, but (correct me if I'm wrong) it seems like it can only do backup to tape, I want to an external hard drive. Would it be...

    Backup Software for 10.4 Server

I am looking for a backup software for my Mac OS X Server. The only one I have found so far is Retrospect 6.0 Workgroup, which costs much more than I want to pay. Also this has far more features than I need; I only need to do a backup of my server every other night, and do not need to back up...
