My Crossfire external disk drive has an extreme hum that becomes louder and more high pitched at times. The unit itself is pretty warm to the touch. It has plenty ventilation and the connecting cables are all secure. The unit is never turned off and doesn't seem to 'sleep' when my Mac G4 goes...
