So, I'm replying to myself... but I thought I'd share what happened to my mac. I think it did have something to do with the password for my user, everytime it froze was when the installer would usually ask for my password. I fiddled around with users, creating new ones, changing my password...

Whoops, I over edited... this is what it was supposed to say... I'm in the same position. Every kind of installer program or updater, apple or 3rd party, stops responding as soon as I hit install. I can pick the volume agree to the contract, etc. I have repaired permissions, repaired the disk...

I'm having a similar problem....
