Thanks Satcomer, I tried that one. It worked for another FW device, but not my Maxtor storage unit. I really think Maxtor just needs to create a newer driver for Mac Maxtor users. It's like having the wrong sparkplugs for your car.

MisterMe, this problem has occurred with me as well. It let's me back up my data, but then won't mount to the desktop. It happens randomly. What do you mean by 'finalizing the disk'? Is that the same as 'verifying'?

I talked to Apple directly, because I was having the same issue. Apparently dual burners (i.e. CD/DVD) on the G5 have this problem. I, though, noticed that my problem did not occur until I updated to 10.4.4. Apple gave me no assurrance of fixing the problem.
