thanks for replying, i figured out why it wasn't working. I had downloaded two files because one wasn't working, but did it to 2 separate locations. I was trying to play a dead file... how's that for a frustrating novice mistake, ha ha. Oh well, that's how we learn.

I just downloaded an xvid file and it won't play on anything - VLC, quicktime, wmp, etc. I have the xvid codecs and tried a few others but nothing seems to work. Can anyone help?
