Appears to be OK if I power the drive with a transformer, but defeats the use of it as a portable drive

Just bought the above. Works on the windoze machines but not seen by the PB (non-intel 15" alumimium). Saw some suggestions that it draws over 500mv from USB and therefore exceeds specs and apples are limited to 500mv but not sure if this is hot air. Drive is not even seen by PB. Ideas anyone...
