hi fryke, thanks again. i didn't try connecting another device to that previous firewire port. i'm just glad my ipod can be synched to my imac. :-)

thanks so much for your posts. :-) i unplugged my ipod firewire, and then plugged it into another firewire socket in my imac, and the problem is solved. the ipod icon now appears on my imac and in itunes. thank God!
