I solved the problem, like what probably happens with most threads as soon as they're posted :) I believe a bulb in the monitor cracked when I was changing resolutions, so I'm buying a new one thanks again

edit: I'm using the latest version of OS X by the way, on a G5 dual 1.8ghz tower. I'm currently on my dad's computer.
