We're also using a Novell (can't remember the version) file server and about 30 Macs running 10.2.4 - 10.2.8 and we also get some freezes on about 5 of the machines. Whenever I get a computer with this problem I've done the following:
Because the machine has frozen I reset it (anyway I can) and startup in single user mode (Apple-S), then run "/sbin/fsck -y". Then type "exit" and the Mac continues to start OSX as normal.
When it's started I use the Terminal to run the following commands:
su
(you then need the root password)
appletalk -d
appletalk -x
(then enter the Appletalk zone number)
When this is done, I use the Disk Utility to repair file permissions.
Then I try the Novell server again and this works... for a while!
To fix it better I have to re-install OSX with the preserve Users and Network Setting option and that normally fixes. But that hasn't worked on every single Mac! This is really strange because even a brand new Powerbook G4 with a fresh install of OSX had problems with the network and I had to reinstall as above.
