10.2.8 - FTP Access SECURITY

wicky

play thing
I want to serve a simple little web page, and create a FTP drop box..... without leaving my machine wide open.

I've just tried to set up the web sharing and FTP access on my 10.2.8 machine, and it couldn't have been easier. I poked a whole through the linux firewall that lives between us and the outside world, create a new OSx user account with no admin rights, switched on web sharing and ftp access.... job done. Or at least it should have been.

Then i tested it on a shonky old PC, and to my amazement (and abject horror!) i realized that my whole machine was wide open!! Obviousy, I've switched off the web and FTP access for now, but surely this shouldn't be the case?

Has anybody else managed to sort it out? Is Panther any better? Or, have i just failed to find the button that stops access to every folder on my machine?

Did you make sure that the respective firewalls were on? Click on the tab that says Firewalls in the Sharing pane and make sure they're on.

yes, the firewall on the mac was switched on, with the relevant ports open to allow personal file sharing, personal web sharing, ftp access and printer sharing.

i logged on via another mac and it all seemed fine (restricted access), but when i logged via a pc-ftp client everything was open.

could it be a permissions issue? would that really leave it all open?
