i upgraded my two-week-old 17" powerbook from 10.2.6 to 10.2.8. afterwards, every reboot attempt led to an immediate
kernel panic. since i still have my 90-day phone support, i called them: it's a "known issue." (i'd like to see steve jobs have a meeting with the guy who pushed out a broken version of OS X.)
in case you don't have applecare, the supposed fix:
* boot from the OS x install/recovery DVD (insert DVD when the machine is powered on and says "you need to restart", hold down power key until power-down, press power key again and hold down "C" until you see the installer app running)
* when you get to the destination window, click Options...
* choose "backup and install" (i forget the exact name: don't choose "upgrade" or "erase and install")
* check "save user data" or whatever it says
* click OK
* back to destination window, click Install
(system backs out to 10.2.6 or whatever is on your
recovery DVD)
this is where i am now. supposedly i won't lose any of my
system config, personal data, or third-party software. we'll
see.
jon.
p.s. phone support should be free for kernel panics caused by
apple, even if you're out of applecare.
