10.2 startup page freeze - quicksilver 733

Hiya all, i'm having problems installing jaguar.

I have seven silver G4s at work, and we are looking at making the transition from 9.2 to 10.2 on them all.

Spec:
PowerMac G4 733Mhz 'Quicksilver'
256MB ram
NVIDIA Geforce2 MX

I did a 'zero all data' erase on the drive, and installed an 'off the shelf' copy of 10.2, and it won't go beyond the grey apple startup screen. No spinning coloured disc. Nothing. No power off. Reset works tho. Shift key does nothing.
Seems wierd that it doesn't like our configuration. The install works fine on the mac i'm on now -_ a 350Mhz G4.

Any thoughts, ideas or help would be appreciated... It's not really giving me any options at present...

**Update - I have been reading on the forums about firmware updates. I didn't think about this before because the G4 350 worked with jaguar just fine, but could the firmware of the 733 be incompatible with Jaguar?

I have not zapped the P-RAM or tried searching for firmware updates yet, I want to know if it could be this before wasting more time. Again, does anyone know if this could be the problem?

Thnx in advance..

Yes, it sounds like you are in need of the INCLUDED firmware updates that are on the Mac OSX 10.2 CD.
In many cases (such as your machines at work) you may find that they have already been installed in your routine maintanance of OS9.2.2 (make sure you have the latest version update to OS9.x for running classic), although it seems you have not.
Just run any firmware updates on the CD that are required, then your install should proceed just fine.
I have the same machine as you, and I had no problems whatsoever.

just an update on mattsplatt's problems with osx10.2 and quicksilver machines. the quicksilvers don't require a firmware update (this has been checked). we have tried swapping the ram/video cards with our working g4 350 to check for hardware conflicts, zapping pram, none of this works. I did however take the hard drive out of our g4 350 yesterday (with 9.2.2 and 10.2 installed, the latter has since been upgraded to 10.2.3), put it into the quicksilver machine and it did boot! interestingly though, the quicksilver drive with 10.2 on did not work with the g4 350 machine (got the no entry sign rather than the apple sign on boot up) - i assume either the newer drive is not compatible with the older 350, or something is corrupting the os during install on the quicksilver. to verify if the problem was related to the ibm drives/firmware which came with the quicksilvers, I installed a brand new drive and installed 10.2 on it - same problem as before. Whatever the problem is, it appears to be fixed with 10.2.3. Of course, to get the 10.2.3 upgrade installed, i have to get os10.2 on it first :-) Gashnois (Mattsplatt's boss!)

Do you have any other pci cards installed in the machines? There are some incompatabilities with especially some scsi cards. I have had this issue to where a scsi card kept me from even booting of the cd, just getting the gray screen and never going anywhere else. If you have any extra cards installed i'd say pull them out and see if you can run the 10.2.x installer.

nope, no non-standard anything, including pci's. the error sounds similar though. I also tried both ATI and NVIDIA gfx cards. same error again...
