10.4.8 and my external hard drive

since I upgraded to 10.4.8 (and I did follow all the usual precautions), now my external hard drive doesn't show up on the desktop AND my digital camera shows up as a generic AND my screensaver no longer recognizes my Iphoto folders- it seems that very many are experiencing problems with this upgrade- the first disappointment I have had from Apple in 10 years- is there a fix to these that anyone is aware of- Thanks

Was the drive plugged in when you upgraded? I've heard a lot about this problem, hopefully we'll see a good answer soon. If you can, see if the drive will mount on a 10.4.7 machine.
 
Try downloading the Combo updater for 10.4.8 and reinstalling the update using that. I haven't used this trick myself, but very many people have found it resolved their upgrade issues.
