12" iBook 1.2, blank screen on startup

I fell asleep watching a DVD on my 12" iBook. When I awoke, I found it playing the DVD audio but the display was blank white.

I did not drop or otherwise agitate the machine. I just fell asleep while it played a movie.

I closed the clamshell and it went to sleep as it should. I reopened it and it gave me the same blank white display. The screen backlight comes on as it should but there is no desktop. I shut it down, removed the battery and let it cool. I restarted, heard the startup sound and heard the drive spinning up but stiil saw no display.

Is this a common problem? Is there something simple and obvious that I am missing? I am about six months out of warranty and do not have Apple Care. I just ordered my free replacement battery so that my beloved computer doesn't spontaneously combust. I would hate to think that it is now looking for another way to commit suicide.

Thanks,
J

If it's a G3 iBook, it could possibly have fell victim to the logic board video failures that have plagued so many of the G3 iBooks (white).

Have you tried resetting the NVRAM and the PMU? Apple has support articles that tell you how to do this if you're not sure.
