Right, first things first I feel like I should apolagize for my first post being a cry for help... I'm a little perplexed by this whole situation tho, so any help would be much apreciated.
The facts are as follows:
12" powerbook, 876(?)mhz.. the first generation one. the latest os (10.4?).
My hard drive started making a loud repetative pattern of clicks last night, then crashed. I rebooted shortly after, wich took MUCH longer than normal, but after 5 minutes of seemingly smooth opreation, it crashed again, complete with the horrible loud hard drive noises.
Now when I boot it up it just goes to that "cant find yer os" screen, the grey one with the little flashing finder icon / question mark in a file little file. You'll know it if you've seen it, its a menacing sight indeed.
I have heard no signs of life coming from the hard drive since.
Disk utility doesn't show the hard drive (the cd/dvd works fine)
OSX installer doesn't show the hard drive at the "select a destination" stage.
Firewire disk target mode results in the computer just turning off at the point where the firewire logo would normaly apear and the disk would mount etc.
Single user mode works only with the install DVD in the drive... otherwise it just goes to the grey "cant find yer os" screen. Running fsck in single user mode with the dvd in only checks the dvd, wich is fine. Thats all I know of single user mode.
The question now is thus:
What the hell is going on?
Wil it be fixable? I'm confidant with tools / taking computers apart etc (though I've never taken me powerbook apart). Will I just be able to slap in a replacment (and larger) HD and reinstall os x?
The majority of my data is backed up (about a month ago) so thats not my biggest priority right now (though info on that would also be apreciated)...
I just cant stand being without a computer!!!
Thanks in advance,
Jon.
