17" cinema or large CRT?

I hate Meath
I'm hoping to buy a new monitor for my powermac, I can stretch to a 17" LCD but need advice about whether to go for a smaller LCD or a large screen CRT. At the moment I have two old 17' CRTs that I use in a dual setup that is taking up too much deskspace. I can't afford the 20" screen and I was hoping for something that I could use with Lightwave 3D. Screenspace is premium and I'd like to hear other people's opinons. Is the 17" LCD resolution high enough to allow multiple windows at the same time? Any advice appreciated!

What about a Formac Gallery 1740? It's an excellent 17" LCD screen with the same 1280x1024 resolution as the Apple 17", and it costs less. The question is: what resolutions do you run now, and how big do these multiple windows need to be? How much screen space do you actually need, in other words?

We have a 19" CRT monitor here at home that usually runs at 1152x870, though if it were my monitor I'd probably run it higher. On a 15" monitor, this resolution is almost equivalent to 832x624 or 800x600, and I run my iMac at 1024x768. You can find screens that run higher resolutions than screens with more physical size; it all depends on what you need.

At moment I have 2 17" CRTs running at 1024 X 768, Lightwave has 101 different windows for managing surfaces, textures, background images and presets etc. I would probably need something with at least 1280 X 1024. Desktop space is the main problem right now. I really need to get rid of one monitor, but still need lots of screen space to work with! Can't afford anything larger than 17" LCD right now though:(

Why not keep a 17" and add a 17" Apple LCD?

That way you could always push the Apple monitor back a few feet if you needed the space.

I have a 21" CRT and it takes up a lot of room from its front to the back. If you have a deep but narrow desk, this may be a solution for you, since it's not too wide, and CRTs are dirt cheap these days.

Like you I had a pair of 17" monitors, so I was excited to get the 17" flat pannel to "save desk space".

...but to tell you the truth this never panned out. The first thing I did when I got the flat screen was push it far back on my desk... but after about 10 minutes I realized I couldn't see it. (Partially age and partially that i could not bring myself to lower the resolution below 1280x1024.)

So I've since placed the front of my flat screen exactly where the front of my old CRT used to be. Sure I have lots of desk space, but it is all BEHIND the flat screen and thus completely useless. :(

Truthfully the nice thing is that i have a deep desk. If you CRT is currently too far forward, but also touching the wall in back, then yes a flat screen may help you get more desk space.

Cheers everybody, looks like I might have to hold on until I can afford a bigger LCD, I'd like to clear my desk of all but one monitor and the big CRTs are, well.. too big;) I might check out 20" cinema displays and also Formacs selection.
