17 inch iMac dialing randomingly

A friend of mine has a 17 iMac which has a strange quirk of dialing up every few minutes out of the blue, they use AOL:rolleyes: as there service provider, i havent really spent enough time on their machine to look into what the problem may be, does anyone have any suggestions or have gone through a similar experience?
 
Is Software Update set to automatic? If so, switch it to Manual in the System Prefs panel. Think of any other Internet related software that operates on a schedule and disable their auto-connect.
 
ok, it is actually at my house right now so i can take a closer look at any of that stuff
 
In the network prefence pane, check out the "Internal Modem" settings.. go to the "PPP" tab and click "PPP options".... make sure that the Mac does not "automatically dial when needed"
