Just wonderin' if anyone shares the low range problem I have with the above mentioned items. Runnin' OS X on a G5 w/ airport extreme and have a brand new 1701hg gateway wireless dsl modem and the signal drops to zero if it more than 7' away across a clear room(There is the base for the wireless land line phone in the room). Does the phone distort the signal that much or have I missed something I can tweek in the setup. I am new to Macs and not very bright but I am stubborn. Perhaps the antena came loose? Thanks

Take a look at the setup in your 1701HG to allow it to switch to slower speed. Auto would be my guess instead of selecting a particular speed - ala 54g.

WiFi signal strenght is relative to distance as you have discovered - to compensate the computer and WiFi should autonegotiate a slower rate to keep connectivity. So, the farther away you get, the slower it should be.

Since you drop connectivity altogether, it sounds like to me that the set up either on the G5 or WAP(wireless access point - 1701) or both are not set to allow that negotiation to happen.

Let us know...

It may be that you are suffering local interference, changing the wireless channel on the router may make all the difference. My Pb is happiest with 12!
