3Ghz P4, or 1.8Ghz G5

Ok, there would be a significant price difference here to deal with.. but honestly.

Would a 3ghz p4, with 1gb ddr400, run Avid $1300
just as well as a 1.8Ghz G5 with 512 DDR400? $2400

If the p4 system would run it better.. im not dishing out the cash. although FCP would be nice.

Your best bet is to test them out. Asking in a Mac forum will get you very pro-mac answers, and asking in a Windows/PC forum will give you very pro-PC answers.

The real proof is in the use of the machine. I suspect the performance difference would be insignificant, and the real difference would be in their software and capabilities. Give them a try out, and if the dealer isn't willing to let you take them for a test drive, go see somebody who will.

...And from what my Video professors tell me, there is not much of a difference between Avid, FCP, and Premiere... one can learn the basics in one app, and those abilities will translate easily to the next. it's probably more of a question of which editing system do you prefer and which OS do you prefer?

Especially for graphical stuff, there's a lot more important things to consider than just the processor speed: internal bandwitdh is very important for instance, and AltiVec might make the difference, depending on what exactly you will be doing.

I think I would go for the G5, considering the FSB of .9 GHz, the RAM expandability and the fact that soon there will be all kinds of optimizations for the G5 (Photoshop already announced).

You might also check out whether the apps you are going to use are multiprocessor-aware. This can give a significant boost, and you could check out dual systems, either G5 or Xeon. I know it's more expensive, but if you need it for your work, you might profit by the advantage it gives.
