600 MHz G3 and OS X

Somewhere... dunno though
can a 600 MHz G3 iMac handle the tasks of iMovie, iTunes, and iPhoto in OS X along with basic word processing and internet use?

my friend is selling his for $500 and i just wanted to know before i buy...

(also... i will be maxing out the RAM to 512 so don't worry about that...)

I have a 500 mhz iBook with 640 megs and runs iMovie, iTunes etc. just fine. iPhoto is a bit sluggish, but that's the chinsy 8-meg graphics card we get. :(

But yeah, it will run OS X just fine.

My mom's 600 MHz iBook is MORE than capable of running OS X very comfortably, and it comes really close (and often seems faster) to rivaling the speed on my 450 MHz G4 cube.

iTunes works great, although I never tried iPhoto and iMovie. I expect them to work well, though.

Sorry if this is an invaluable post (:p) , but, yeah, a 600 MHz iMac should run OS X nicely. 500 $ is pretty cheap, too.
My G4/500 runs OS X almost perfectly (but, as always, a little sluggish on window resizing), so a 600 MHz G3 should run at least as fast. All the i-apps also seem snappy, although I haven't actually used iMovie and iPhoto, just tested them :)

So, get that Mac, and be happy ;)

Yup, that'll be more than fine. And with the release of 10.2 in a few months I'm sure that it will just get better.

My roommate has a 600 G3 iMac with 256 MB RAM. Running iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, surfing the web and word processing probably isn't a good idea to do all at once. :) But individually it's just fine. Of course, if you are used to a dual G4, things will seem to be slow. But when I first started using her iMac, I didn't notice that it was slow at all. Of course, that was also my first experience with the Mac OS since System 6...

I have a 500MHz iMac with 320mb of RAM and it runs OSX just fine. I'm a old PC user so I wasn't used to how fast OS9 was but OSX more than meets my needs.

And even if it's a little slower it's made up by the fact that it doesn't crash every 12 hours! ;)

Serioulsy, I run IE, Mail and iTunes all the time, no problems.

I have only played with iMovie a little bit. It worked just fine and fast except when Importing or Exporting clips or the final movie. But, I figure that would be slow regardless since it's such a big process.

Again, I've only played with iPhoto a bit but that was not slow at all...it's just as quick as anything else on my Mac. Uploading to iDisk is slow but that's iDisk's fault.

I think you'll be just fine!

You guys are all speed demons compared to me :) I have 266 G3 and I consider it comfortable in OS X.1.3 (not in X.0 so be sure to get an upgrade CD). Sure window resizing is jerky but I do most of my work in applications, not the finder. Right now I have Project builder, Omniweb, Mozilla, Adium, iTunes, and the terminal open and I switch between each constantly. I have 256 megs of ram which Makes all the difference in the world so I'm sure 512 will be plenty.

I have one of the first-batch iBook 500s, with the slower 66 system bus, and only 128mb RAM and it is an absolute pleasure to use OS X. I keep a limit of three "serious" apps or five "bitsy-piecy" apps open at a time, and restart it once a fortnight to force it to clean up. I no longer have OS 9 installed and havn't missed it too much.
Though it might take a few bounces to actually start an application, it will run brilliantly once you actually get going. I can only imagine the 600 iMac with the better system bus would be ideal for, as you say, "iMovie, iTunes, and iPhoto in OS X along with basic word processing and internet use"

As everyone else said, go for it, it'll be fine :)
I had to revert to my WallStreet 350 (192ram 83 bus) for a week my TiBook was in service, and it was adequate. I try to do 100 things at once on my computers, and it could do it, just a bit slower, obviously. I'm sure a 600 would run X fine, especially after some tuning.
