800 Firewire woes!

Warning. Local stores not only don't have, but don't even know what an 800 Meg Firewire cable is! They all wanted to sell me 6-pin to 4-pin cables.

Background: Wife just bought new 15" MBP to replace 14" white iBook. In order to use Migration Assistant to transfer apps, docs, & settings, you need either FW cable or network. Network freezes Migration Assistant on the old iBook, and there is no 400 6-pin plug on the new MBPs.

I did find a 6' $30 6-pin (400) to 9-pin (800)---yes, that's what they call it---Firewire cable on Amazon for $6.89! Great price, but won't have it for a week!

There are adaptors available also (Other World has them), but a true cable was better for me.

This is called a "bilingual Firewire cable" and you can find them inexpensively on the Web.

Here is one for only $4.50 from Monoprice.com:

My personal feeling is that you should never purchase cables from a local store unless you are in a big hurry for some reason. You can always find them much cheaper on the Web. My favorite place for cables is:

http://www.trianglecables.com
(They don't have the absolute cheapest cables, but they have extremely high quality cables for the price.)

Cable received and transfer done!

Should have gotten a 6-pin to 9-pin converter also. All my app backups are on 6-pin external HD. Without it, I'll need to swap cables with the 2 computers, but with it, I'd just need to put converter on. Oh well; save that for next order.

Never heard of support your local small business I guess. By the time you pay shipping and take business away form you local economy, what are the true savings?
