I have extensively upgraded an 8600 series with a sonnet G4800 card, 1024 Mb ram, and a fujitsu U160 10k drive connected to an Adaptec 29160 card running 10.3.9. The tower runs fast and solid, never a blip or crash. In order to boot from the 29160/fujitsu, I need to have a second scsi drive connected to the motherboard scsi as a helper drive, otherwise it won't boot from the 29160 card. I read somewhere that it's possible to change the boot string in osx? Also, any thoughts of adding a second U160 drive to the adaptec chain and seeting up the 2 drives as a raid? I have a 9600 tower that I plan on using as a test platform with a similar setup, so I can somewhat afford to experiment without risk of really screwing things up/data loss before setting up the 8600. I've read all sorts of concerns regarding the 29160 card, I find it performs flawlessly in my 8600, aside from the startup issue. Since I'm starting to build another 8600, can anyone recommend a better ultra wide scsi card solution? Thanks

the boot thing, which i know from running os x on two 7500s and a 8600, is an issue with running os x on an unsupported mac, there is no way around it that i have found. as far as the scsi card, i have no experience with them ( i ran mine with an ide card and drive). but if you get one that is mac compatible for os 9.1 and the version of os x that you are running, it should be just fine.
