If the 970 1.8GHz is so close in characteristics with G4/1GHz with some design alterations of the PowerBook in general, they may actually pull a 970-based xBook easily...

And then Apple will sell them like "Hot Cakes"

;)

:D

The last figures I've read, it's a 1 GHz PPC 970 that uses more power than a 1 GHz G4, so I guess 'hotter' PPC 970 are a no go... But then again, it all depends on whether IBM _plans_ to release a PowerPC 970 version for notebooks. If so, then why not?

All I'm saying is that I personally never had the feeling that even the G4 was suited for a PowerBook. The G3 processor always seemed much more 'mobile' to me. But I'm all for 'the year of the notebook'! And I'll be the first to hail the arrival of the next PowerPC generation...

Uhm, reverse that... a 1.2 Ghz 970 draws less than 20 Watts, where the 1.2 Ghz G4 draws around 32 Watts (estimated). The 970 is a much better choice for laptops/etc. However, at the current max, a 1.4Ghz G4 seems to draw less power than a 1.8Ghz 970... so the G4 seems to be a better long-term choice for laptops (for now).

The IBM Blade servers are designed for are small systems that are made for clustering, and don't have a lot of space or airflow... cool chips are vital. Ironically, laptops and blades seem to have similar requirements in terms of power and heat.

Thanks for correcting me. Like I said: I'm all for faster PowerBooks. :p
