A bad scene for my HD

I ran into this error while trying to defrag with Nortin Utilities. Just how bad is this problem? Maybe this is whats been making my mouse pointer sputter?

Anyway, the big question is how do I fix this? Is there a system restore function anywhere in osx?

naa disk utility dosen't do the work

but if its is really bad just reinstall the OS

no data is lost! Just that u need to re-update it as well.

I don't think that a system re-install will correct a B-tree problem.

Yea, you might have to run Disck Doctor a few times. Run it till it says everything is ok, I always bypass the defective media option to save on time. I had that issue a few times, run Norton, then restart from the Jag install CD, check permissions, then fsck -y from single user mode. That should clear everything up.

What kind of hard drive do you have? brand/model?

If the Disk Utility doesn't work, try Norton's Disk Doctor. If Disk Doctor doesn't fix it, make sure your important data is backed up. You may need to reformat the hard drive. From my own experience, if it still does not go away, you may have a problem with the hard drive as I did a couple years ago. I finally got my extended warranty company to come replace it.

i had a b-tree error. have you ever updated your coregraphics file? maybe changed ur cursor, or icons?? in that case, you need to get a new one and replace it.
try running fsck -y. and repair your permissions as well. then try reinstalling. after i fixed my comp, i backed it all up, and reformatted. now its all fine..but, when i run the 10.2.5 combo update it says i run accross errors. anyone know?

I was going to run the combo update, but the system is fine, so i will leave it alone. I think it is a permissions issue, and the install cd might not be able to sniff out all the issues in these latest releases. Because there tends to be a permissions problem whenever my system starts to act weird.

spitty: Yeah I used CandyBar to change my icons a while ago. And as the old saying goes; it looks like I'm up Sh*t Creek without a pinhead for a paddle.

ric d and urbansory: Sounds good except for the fact that I lost my Disk Doctor CD about 3 months ago so I can't run the repair from the CD. I'm basically a lost soul at the moment who just wants to wake up from this nightmare. But besides that everythings cool.

At any rate, all your guys advise has turned out to be quite helpful so thanks. I have my work cut out for me.

worse case, install the system in place, but not sure if it would clear that up since you are not reformating the drive.

On a completely unrelated note.....

spitty27.....you've been a pismo owner since 00AD!?!?!?! Thought peecee folks used the 2 digits to rep the year? hehe

Wasn't that how the Y2K prob came about? ;-P

Hold down Apple + S keys at startup, this will get you into single user mode. At the prompt, type

fsck -y

when it's finished, do it again until you get the message that your hard drive appears to be okay. Then type

reboot

Yeah, fsck -y will work for ya, habilis. It fixes incorrect leaf records fine. I've run into a few of those. Just keep running it till it tells you the drive appears to be OK.

I don't think that would be what is making your mouse sputter, though. Usually that only happens when some program is using close to 100 % of the CPU processing time.

fsck -y doesn't get everything. So don't be fooled by it saying everything is fine, because there could be deeper problems lurking within.

I know fsck doesn't get everything, I was pointing out that it does fix the invalid leaf errors.

And it doesn't ever say everything is fine, it says that the drive appears to be OK. Not quite the same thing. ;)

You know what I meant

I can find them, say it fixed them and sometimes it doesn't, thats all i was saying. ;)
