a couple iMacs and an iBook

Struggling - and failing - to get our two imacs and the iBook speaking to each other.

All running OSX 10.2.8.

The imacs are ethernet cabled to our ADSL router - they speak with each other fine.

The iBook uses an airport card to connect with the airport (which is itself ethernet cabled to the ADSL router).

The iBook connects to the web just fine - but can't see or be seen by the iMacs when we're trying to network them.

Having taken years to get comfortable with System 7.5, I'm out of my depth here.

All advice appreciated. Please and thanks.

And, if I can get this sorted, I'll try to get my son's PC (that uses a wireless card to connect with the airport) onto the network.

Are the addresses being given out through DHCP from the router? If not, are they all set to be in the same network with the proper subnet mask and gateway?

Are any of the Macs doing file sharing??? I think you have to enable it before you can see anything.

One thing you can do is ping the IP addresses of the other Macs from one of the machines. If you get a reply, then at least you know they are communicating. If not, then you need to double check your IP addressing scheme.

Of course, AppleTalk should be able to see those other machines, even with Rendezvous, but since I haven't played much with Rendezvous I don't know if you need to create a share to have it be detected on the network.

>Are the addresses being given out through DHCP from the router?

Yes.

>Are any of the Macs doing file sharing?

All have 'Personal File Sharing' on.

>One thing you can do is ping the IP addresses

How?

>Of course, AppleTalk should be able to see those other machines...

All have AppleTalk on.

Update... having discovered Network Utility...

One way traffic... the iBook will successfully ping the iMacs - and, entering their IPs with afp:// etc will network.

It doesn't work the other way though.????

The iMacs IP are in a block 10.0.0.etc. As are the router and the airport.
The subnet mask is 255.0.0.0

The iBook IP is in a block 10.0.1. etc.
The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

Any illumination appreciated. Please and thanks.

It sounds like you have two DHCP servers (that give out IP addresses) going at once. Make sure the airport is set to NOT give out IP adresses and that the other router (its IP number) is referred to in the laptop network setup.

You can also use Terminal to ping addresses by giving the command: "ping <ip address>"

I'm sure you did this since you mentioned that you pinged, but I though I would answe the question anyways :-D

i agree with gsahli, you need to make sure that only one of the router either being the DSL or Airport base is giving out DHCP addresses. In addition, I would make sure that your subnet mask is the same. such as all being 255.255.255.0 or 255.0.0.0

Thanks all. That fixed it.
