a DECENT complaining thread

Ok, here's a real reason to complain about Apple, and it has NOTHING to do with hardware specs :D

Where do they get off selling 2 GB RAM for $1200?

originally quoted by the Apple Store
2 GB of RAM, add $1200

Now, adding 2 GB of ram = 3 additional DIMMs (since 512 comes with the package).

I go to coastmemory.com and look up the price of 3 512 MB PC2700 DDR memorry DIMMs by Samsung at $167 each.

That's $501 folks. $501 for 2 GB of RAM, yet apple charges $1200??? $700 price gouge!!!

And I remember like a year ago seeing the Apple one button optical mouse selling for $80 when the awesome 2 button + scrollwheel Microsoft optical mouse was $20.00????

Where does apple come off quadrupling the price of hardware?

Do they actually make a killing off of this?

'Cause they get little Apple fairies to gently place the RAM in like no one else can (and sprinkle some Apple-lovin' fairy dust over them when they've finished)... hence the $1200 price tag.

You've GOT to be kidding me

no, that's the truth. i've seen it. :D

seriously - only the naive would order extra ram from apple. so why shouldn't they make a few bucks when somebody is willing to pay them for it?

besides apple needs to leave room for third parties to make money when you don't buy from them. the more companies that make stuff for the mac, the better the platform looks to potential switchers.

I have heard that the reason Apple's prices are so much higher is that quite a while ago they bought long term contracts with memory suppliers and in return get a fixed-rate price for each stick. The reasoning behind this is that just in case a few RAM manufacturing plants blow up and prices suddenly skyrocket (like LCD prices after floods in Taiwan some time ago) then Apple can still charge the same price for RAM while everybody else goes through the price increase. However, this deal, if true, has not paid off, and probably never will. It just costs end users more than it's worth - $1200 for RAM is just ridiculous, and I don't think any disaster to a plant would bring prices higher than that...if this rumor is true then the deal would have had to been made a LONG time ago when RAM was still very expensive...you would expect Apple to anticipate RAM price drops though.

I personally think Apple is just trying to milk some stupid/"im scared of the inside of my computer" users into buyig RAM from them, as there is a really hefty profit in it. Unfortunately Apple has also been taking away the ability to modify things like you used to be able to with newer hardware...when I bought my WallStreet I could modify processor speed, HD- basically anthing down to the screen size. Today, you can't modify any of these things...why make things harder Apple? What I would *really* like to at least see is the ability to downgrade to 128 MB of RAM (or maybe NO RAM!) for midlevel machines and buy 512 through a 3rd party...not going to happen anytime soon though with their current strategy.

A lot of computer manufacturers, not just Apple charge outrageous prices for upgrades such as memory.

It's unfortunate though because the average consumer really doesn't know any better.

A good case in point is PC Laptops, if you ever need anything from the manufacturer, they've got you by the swingers!

Whoa, that must be a very English idiom... :) Could you enlighten those of us who are non-English but speak the language as to what that phrase means? I can't tell whether what you said is good or bad. :p

i could be from mars and still figure out what 'got you by the swingers' means ^_^.
uh, in a nutshell it means they can do whatever they want with you.
