A Mac in a Windows network...hell or no?

As I've said before, I need a laptop for school. I'll buy it in late September. I want a Mac, but there is one crucial issue that still needs solving, Macs in PC networks.

I can't help it, I'll be in Windows networks all the time, wireless and wired.
I'll have no access to these Windows machines, meaning if I need a file off of one I must be able to do anything a Windows machine can from my Mac. Can I do this? Without knowing ONE folder/file name? And without setting up the Windows PC to be kind to me...
I'll also have to connect to wireless networks not specifically configured for Macs, but for Windows PCs...

This is key for what I need a laptop for, if it can't do this I might as well get a PC...will a PB have a shot at these things?

You can connect you Mac to PC network,
I think the software called Dave? Not sure which software that let you connect Mac to PC.

That's one of the advantages of OS X. If you wait long enough, you can get a Powerbook with Panther installed, which should be even better about it than Jaguar.

Macs work on Windows networks a helluva lot easier than Windows PCs work with Windows networks ... sad but true.

AMEN! :D

I've seen PC's that couldn't even find themselves on the network!

Yup. I use my PowerBook G4 at my university, CSUF, and it works just dandy with Windows file sharing in the dorms.

Good. That made my decition MUCH easier.

And about waiting for a Panther PowerBook, I expect new PBs and Panther to be ready by AppleWorld Expo Paris. I'll order around that date, wether it's updated or not...

That's actually a part of my middle finger on my right hand. I burned the hand on the inside when I was about a year old, and have had the scar since then.
I took a picture, put out a little part of it, photoshopped in the green and put it out here.
Only reason I have that is because it's a big part of my identity...and it looks kina cool with a stone-iMac-effect...

eww... ;-)
about the PowerBook in Windows network(s) thingie: expect sysadmins to NOT be helpful. instead: find out how to do everything you need yourself. just ask for the infos that a Windows user would get (that's more than enough, anyway). then show THEM how easy it is for a Mac user to join the networks. after that they'll know themselves, be Mac fans and propagate our faith among the unfaithful. ;-)

Heck, Windows or Mac, I don't ever expect sysadmins to be helpful. I've lived with Mac and Windows sysadmins, and they were all useless...if the PB CAN do it, then I can do it without them... macosx.com is all I need

That's your hand? Interesting. I though it was some fjord or something. Maybe something from Slartibartfast (if you've read any of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker books). :)

It reminded me of a fortune cookie.

Yes, just come to us when the sysadmins are useless. We're here 24/7/365.
