A New Screen For My Powerbook...Whaddya Think?

I've got a 17" Powerbook 1.5GHz which I've been using almost daily for about 6-8 hours at a stretch since I purchased it nearly 3 years ago.
It still runs like a champ, the only problem I've had with it was a failed hard drive a year and half ago which was replaced under AppleCare.
Currently, the screen has lost about 40-50% of its brightness; I guess it's normal for these type of screens....they become progressively dimmer over time, and I do use my Powerbook a lot.
I can have a new screen installed for about $600, and would like to continue using it for perhaps another year and a half. For a number of reasons, I really don't want to go for a new Macbook Pro right now, and my Powerbook is fast enough for my needs; I use it mostly for writing and some photo editing.
So, regarding my intention to have the screen replaced, what sayest thou? Opinions are appreciated.

Do you use it as a laptop frequently? Of is it sitting on your desk? If it's mostly sitting on your desk, you can buy yourself a very nice 20"+ LCD monitor for a lot less than $600.

How difficult is it to use your display as it is?

This is definitely a judgement call, but if you really like your powerbook a screen replacement might make sense.

One last idea: You might want to check out refurbished Macs at the Apple Store (scroll down, look for "deals" or search for "refurbished macs"). I got a 15" MacBook Pro for $1350. Awesome! Last time I looked they were still trying to sell some refurbished 17" Powerbooks. You might even get one of those and sell your old one.

There ya go. Some wacky ideas for you. ;)

I really don't think you should get a new screen, its not worth the $600
better to just wait and get MacBook Pro later, after all it is 3 years old, even though macs are built well, theres more of a chance for something to break down. And Intels are cooler and faster.
