Access to local domain very slow

I have a laptop. When I access things using <hostname>.local resonses can be extremely slow, even when the host is the laptop itself. Interestingly, pings are normal. If I ping, it pops up the correct IP and responds within milliseconds, but if I traceroute, I get a long long list of "* * * *" If I put http://<mylaptop>.local in the browser address it takes ages to respond (or it may time out), but i f I put in HTTP://localhost, it responds as expected.

I have compared standard network settings with another machine I have that does not show this problem, but I can't see any obvious differences.
