Please forgive me if this is in the wrong forum.

I work with a mini mac which has just had a new hard drive installed in it. Mac osX Tiger was installed on it. and since then we have had trouble converting .ps files into PDF format (using Adobe distiller) i have tried exporting the files into pdf but an error message keeps coming up.

if I save as a .ps file it will open using preview and then i can save it from there as a PDF .. but the images are inverted. We have tried different options. But to no avail. Someone else at work had similar problem and they reformatted the mac using the old system disc, i was wondering if i could use the old system disc (OSx 10.2.8) to reformat, as im using a Mini mac. i wasn't sure if the mac and the mini mac use different software (the other computers here are G4.. i think)

ok. so what should i use. is there another OSx disc that i should use. or is there another solution. im using adobe distiller 5.0
 
Did you try exporting the .ps file to .pdf via the Print menu? That option is built into OS X and is located on a button labeled "PDF" in the bottom left hand corner of the Print dialog box.

Have tried exporting files. still no luck.
 
If you are running Tiger than you really should upgrade to Acrobat 6 or 7. If money is tight I'm sure you can find a copy of Acrobat 6 cheap somewhere. Also remember to do the updates bringing 6.0 to 6.0.4.

Have you tried repairing permissions to see if it helps Acrobat 5?

Since Acrobat 5 is a Classic app, repairing permissions wouldn't do anything, really.
 
Point of clarification: Acrobat 5 is Carbon and will work on either MacOS 9 or MacOS X. Distiller 5 is MacOS 9/Classic only. Adobe add MacOS X-compatibility to Distiller until Distiller 6.
 
The solution here is not an easy one to post... so I'm not going to even really try (beyond an outline).

Create a disk image of between 500 MB and 1 GB, move Distiller 5 and your Mac OS 9 System Folder onto the disk image. Remove other copies of Distiller 5 from your system. Point Classic at the system folder on the mounted disk image (via Preferences).

If working with QuarkXPress 4.xx, make sure it is also on the disk image. for best results with all Classic apps, make a disk image large enough to move all of them onto it. You'll need to remember to mount the disk image before starting Classic.

I've done this for a number of clients that still need to work with Distiller 5 and QuarkXPress 4. First time I saw this issue was with a G5 about a year ago.



Also, Apple seems to have made Classic incompatible with AdobePS (any version)... you can create Postscript documents in Classic by choosing LaserWriter 8 in the Chooser and creating them in the printer dialog boxes (Appletalk needs to be active in Mac OS X for this to work as I recall... even if you are not on an Appletalk network).

Not sure just how helpful that will be, but that is the basic run down of what I did the last time I saw this issue. Steps are most likely missing as it really was a hands on type of fix... and it was done quite some time ago.
